Hogwarts Legacy
Avalanche Software | Mission Design

Worked as a 10-Month contractor collaborating with writers and other level designers to create new missions, both side and main, within an open-world map. Created mission flowcharts, set NPC schedules, placed narrative beats, crafted global blueprints, and more. Built in UE4

Mission Design

I worked on 6 missions total within Hogwarts Legacy: 3 main, 3 side. One I had the opportunity to rebuild completely from scratch. I was given loose narrative direction for the mission In The Shadow Of The Mountain with Sebastian Sallow and worked with my writer and producer to craft a new mission and flesh out the narrative within.

I first built out a flowchart of all the narrative beats, quest log objectives, and checkpoints for this mission. I then began to build it out within UE4: NPC schedules, VO placement, AI movement for narrative beats, talk-to prompts, quest beacons, quest objectives and descriptions, scattered notes for more storybuilding outside of dialogue, and hint VOs. Some of this was set up through our proprietary tools. I iterated on the dialogue and narrative beat placements many times to make the hints and guidance better for players without holding their hands too much. I collaborated heavily with other mission designers while working on this questline to build out a few global assets to be used within their missions as well.

For the other missions, I utilized these same tools to continue building and polishing what was already created before joining the project. I also helped set scripting within our dialogue for branching narrative: different consequences to picking a dialogue option or changing dialogue based on previous things the player had done within the world.

All Missions I worked on:

  • Trials of Merlin

  • In The Shadow Of The Mine

  • In The Shadow Of The Mountain

--------------------

  • Gobs Of Gobstones

  • A Friend In Deed

  • The House Cup
